Skull studies

These were created for the 2012 small works show at the Artists House gallery. Fun studies done from a few of the skulls I've collected. Each is roughly actual size.

New works

A recent piece done for an anthology of Jack The Ripper stories due out next year from Night Shade. The print version will be a bit different, but this is the version which I prefer ;)

Stompin' on ants, suckin' their souls

A small piece done for the Adventure Time show at OhNo!Doom gallery in Chicago. There is so much choice material to work with in that show it was hard to know where to begin, but the second that I saw Hunson Abadeer's head split open I was sold.

Here's a fairly recent cover for Creepy, the horror comic series recently revived by Dark Horse. I'll have the original as well as originals of several other paintings recently posted here on display at Spectrum Live next weekend in Kansas City. Hope to see you there!

Terrible Weakness

A little bit later than I had expected, but here is the full composition which followed the head study from a couple weeks back. With this piece I'm continuing to push the new direction and approach and it is really feeling good. I can't think of any other recent painting which was as exciting and enjoyable as this was to work on. I'm also tremendously proud to say that this piece will be on display at the Allentown Art Museum for the At The Edge: Art of the Fantastic show from June 3rd through September 9th where it will be hanging in some very distinguished company.

Deep thoughts on style

I should be linking these as I write them. Recently I started posting some articles over at The Art Order and just wanted to put up a link here. This most recent post is an examination of style and influences in art and how these can help you grow:

Head Study

Felt like sharing a quick study I did in preparing for a new painting on the way. Experimenting with combining some of the techniques from Coral Demon with the more painterly approach. The full scale piece should be up later this week...

The Old Ones Return

Another piece executed in the newer painterly/naturalist style emphasizing mood, light, and atmosphere over detail and render. This was just a personal experiment piece (never painted a real Cthulhu before), but I'm excited to have a few commissioned illustrations using the new approach lined up. I'll be posting as they go public :)

The Adventures of Link

Here are two pieces I made for an upcoming show at OhNo!Doom in Chicago. The show is all video game related images, and for me that translates to NES classic. It was my first system, my favorite system, and the only console I still use (believe me, Tetris *never* gets old). The choice of which NES game to jump off from was tough at first, but in the end it had to be Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link. It was the first game I ever owned (besides Mario/Duck Hunt I suppose) and it was fuel for my imagination for years and years to follow.

This was also a fun project because it was my first experiment into combining fantasy art subject matter and ideas with the more painterly and naturalistic style which I've been exploring in my gallery work. I definitely will be doing work more along these lines in the future.
